Mark L. Skarpness is vice president in the Software and Services Group and director of embedded operating system engineering for the Open Source Technology Center at Intel Corporation. He is responsible for the development of system software designed to power embedded solutions and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including operating systems, operating system frameworks, and communications and interconnectivity middleware.

 

Before assuming his current role in 2015, Skarpness led a systems engineering team handling integration, release engineering, security and quality assurance for open source technologies and platforms. His contributions to open source leadership at Intel earned him an Intel Achievement Award in 2010. He was also a member of the team recognized when the Open Source Technology Center received an Intel Quality Award in 2014. He joined Intel in 1993 as a software engineer working on broadband networking and has spent more than a decade working in the Open Source Technology Center.

 

Skarpness earned a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds multiple patents in broadband networking and computer architecture and is a frequent keynote speaker at industry events covering software for IoT and embedded devices.
